[New Dessert Trend] Try the Maritozzo!

Maritozzo is an Italian dessert making waves in Japan. Classically, it's a sweet bread sandwich packed with cream, but since becoming a highly sought-after dish in Japan, new flavors and variations have been the talk of foodie blogs and instagram feeds.

Check out the shops below to try Japanese Maritozzo!

Tokyo


Restaurant GGCo. Courtyard by Marriott Tokyo Station


This is one store out of the few that GGCo has around Tokyo. They are a cafe and bakery with many items on the menu including Maritozzo. Try their  "Summer Maritozzo Passion Fruit & Mango'' (350JPY) or the "Summer Maritozzo Coconut & Pine" (350JPY).

GGCo. Courtyard by Marriott Tokyo Station is located on the 1F of Kyobashi Trust Tower a few minutes from Kyobashi station. They are open during the weekdays from 7:30-20:00, Saturday 10:00-17:00 and are closed on Sundays and national holidays

Restaurant cafe cocona


Cafe Cocona is a deli shop that sells all kinds of handmade sweets to eat in or take out with you. Among the sweets they have a number of different Maritozzo like the classic (432JPY) or fruit Maritozzo (594JPY)



They are located about 2 minutes from Oshiage station exit B1 which also makes them very close to Tokyo Sky tree. Open during the week from 8:30-20:30 and over the weekend and national holidays from 8:30-19:00. Closed on Mondays.  


Osaka


Restaurant Osora Cafe


Osora Cafe is a small coffee shop founded in 1935 by a former fruits and vegetables shop owner. Now, Osora Cafe is mostly known for its sweets containing fruits to eat in or take out including Maritozzo. The Osora Maritozzo (480JPY) comes with strawberries in the cream and there is also the Pistachio Maritozzo (572JPY).

Osora Cafe is right outside of Nishinakajima-Minamigata station on the east side. They are open from Thursday to Friday 11:00-19:00, Saturday and public holidays 11:00-18:00, and are closed on Sundays and Mondays. 


Restaurant FRUITS PARLOR+BAKERY Season & Co.


This store's main menu has many sweets with fresh seasonal fruits such as parfait, french toast, fruit sandwich and many more.  Maritozzo is in the takeout menu such as the classic Maritozzo (500JPY) and the Strawberry Maritozzo (500JPY).

Kyoto


Restaurant Coffee Base BnA


When something like the Maritozzo booms, everyone wants to make one that is unique to their shop and Coffee Base BnA certainly put a twist on theirs with the Black Maritozzo (400JPY). The bread is turn black by baking it with black cacao and bamboo charcoal stuffed with espresso cream. 



Located on the 2F of Bna Alter Museum about 5 minutes south from  Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station. Open everyday from 10:00-18:00.


Restaurant Trentanove


Trentanove is an italian cafe that focuses on seasonal Kyoto vegetables and fruits for its dishes- particularly in their desserts. They also mix in some Kyoto style in the way they present them, very colorful and elegant. This is also apparent in their Maritozzo, not just the way the fruits are placed in the cream but the added flower garnish that adds a Kyoto vibe to this Italian dessert. Their newest addition is the  Strawberry Maritozzo (500JPY) and the Clementine Maritozzo (500JPY).



Located about 7 minutes from Keihan Jingu Marutamachi Station, use exit number 5, walk along the river and then cross the Kojin bridge. They are open on Monday from 14:00-18:30, Tuesday to Saturday 12:00-18:30 and are closed on Sunday.
