Tea Time with Matcha: Top 5 Editor’s Picks
2021-02-19
It’s tea time in Tokyo, and that means matcha! Japanese green tea, now recognized everywhere as simply “matcha” , invokes an instantaneous  connection with Japanese culture and food. The bitter green powder is now more popular as a flavor additive than its original traditional tea form. Let’s check out five spots to enjoy all kinds of matcha treats and tea time around Tokyo!

Restaurant  Jugetsudo Ginza Kabukiza Store

With an interior designed by Kengo Kuma, the sleek wood is both modern and unmistakably Japanese. Jugetsudo is the brand name under which seaweed supplier Maruyama Nori sells tea, and has over 160 years of business history. For a traditional experience, we recommend a simple “Matcha Hatsumukashi” (1390JPY) which features powdered green tea with “okashi” (traditional Japanese sweet) to be enjoyed as you would in a Japanese tea ceremony. For something more modern, opt for the “Mont Blanc Set with Hot Drink” (all 1,440 JPY) where you can choose to pair your matcha mont blanc with either tea or coffee.

Restaurant Daisan Mannendo HANARE

Located in Waterras Mall near Shin-Ochanomizu Station, Daisan Mannendo Hanare is the bridge between Japanese and Western sweets. The shop favorite is their Matcha Daisan Parfait (1,200 JPY), a homemade treat with anko, warabi-mochi, ice cream and jelly. Another shop original “dora-pan” (500JPY~) combines a traditional dorayaki filling like anko and soy cream sandwiched between flour bread.

Restaurant  Fujii Meien

Located on the 6th floor of Tokyu Plaza Shibuya, Fujii Meien uses premium matcha from Uji, Kyoto. For meals, try their “Cha Kaiseki Zen Set” (1990JPY) complete with 5 side dishes, rice, soup, and Uji tea. For sweets, we recommend the Matcha Brulee Parfait (1650JPY a la carte, 2,090JPY Uji tea set). You can also try one of their “tea-tails” (a spin on “tea” and “cocktails”) like the “Matcha and Genmaicha Gin Tonic” (800 JPY).

In the bustling city center of Shibuya, Kagurazaka Saryo offers a relaxing Japanese tearoom for the weary shopper. Enjoy a meal prepared with dashi and seasonal vegetables in a modern kaiseki style. The real treats are the matcha-centric desserts. We recommend the “saryo parfait Japanese tea set” (1,400JPY).
