Ask any local about Daikanyama, and you’ll frequently hear “stylish” or “trendy”. This area is known for designer clothes and other high-end brands, but also offers high quality food, coffee, and beer. The popular pancake shop, Flippers, and organic beauty store Lush also have branches located right outside the North exit. Another 3 minute walk down the road will take you to the trendy craft beer restaurant, Spring Valley Brewery. Despite the abundance of stylish clothes and restaurants, the unofficial centerpiece of Daikanyama is the T-Site Tsutaya building; a 3 wing building with a massive collection of books, music, and movies. There’s a Starbucks lounge on the first floor, where patrons can enjoy a drink and some food while reading, relaxing, or studying. T-Site Tsutaya is located down to road from the station, so many visitors and locals like to simply stop by and spend an afternoon reading and browsing the impressive collection. The downside is that it can get quite crowded when lots of people spend 2-4 hours in a seat, especially in the late-afternoons, regardless of weekdays or weekends.
For a quiet, yet stylish afternoon, stay closer to the station and find Tenoha Daikanyama- this small cul-de-sac of businesses surround a small garden terrace where patrons of any store can dine and relax when the weather permits. Here, you’ll find a cafe from Italy with a long history which first planted its roots in Japan in 2014. Bondolfi Boncaffe provides coffee, tea, food, and sweets all day, making it a perfect backup to the generic Starbucks. You can also check out the other shops surrounding the terrace space to get a feel for what locals normally think of when asked about Daikanyama. If you visit in the evening, you’ll be greeted with tasteful string lights decorating the entire space for a whimsical garden atmosphere.
Bondoffi Boncaffe is open from 9AM to 11PM on weekdays, and 11AM to 11PM on weekends and National Holidays.
Located on the other side of the station, this little cafe and bakery shares a space with lifestyle and accessory textile shop, Cocca.
The first floor is mostly textile displays - featuring cute Japanese-style designs original to this shop. Cocca focuses on fabric sales, so for those who like the DIY route, this shop is highly recommended. Otherwise, they also offer a limited variety of ready-made goods like canvas bags and pins.
Grab a pastry and a cup of joe to be able to use the second floor cafe space- complete with Wi-Fi and outlets to recharge your electronics!
SIRO to IROIRO is open everyday from 8AM to 7PM, and only close on the first Tuesday of each month.
Daikanyama has a plethora of small shops and dives to explore, so if you happen to pass through, or have your eyes set on a designer item, make some time to wander through the small streets and alleys of this trendy neighborhood.
