Ueno Ameyoko Cheap Eats! 5 OpenRice Recommendations😋
2019-05-01
A Tokyo staple for tourists looking for the local experience! The historical shopping street that connects Ueno station and Okachimachi station “Ameyoko”. Known for cheap shopping and food, the street is always bustling with locals and tourists alike. Take a stroll down the street, and pick up some cheap eats on the way!😋

RestaurantNew Fruits / Fruit Skewers
A fruit shop that sells perfectly skewered slices of fruit on a stick for about JPY 100 per stick. They also sell freshly squeezed fruit juice starting from JPY200.

RestaurantMinatoya Shokuhin Main Store / Takoyaki

If you walk towards Okachimachi station, you’re sure to find “Minatoya Shokuhin”, a popular spot known for serving fresh seafood kaisendon, shipped directly from Tsukiji market. Even more popular, is the giant 4-piece takoyaki plate at only JPY200. Order a plate, share with friends, and keep going!

Restaurant Niku no Oyama / deep fried “menchi katsu” meat cakes

Established in 1932, “Niku no Oyama” started as a humble butcher shop. Because it sells meat at wholesale, you can eat A5 grade meat at surprisingly reasonable prices. The “tokusei menchi katsu” and croquettes are sold out front, and can be eaten immediately at the convenient standing-bar area. If you’re lucky enough to visit on the  29th  of any month,  they serve a special “Oyama Steak Lunch” for JPY850.

Restaurant Cha no Kiminoen / Matcha Ice Cream

A matcha specialty shop with almost 100 years of history. A great place to shop for authentic Japanese green tea, but even better for their rich and creamy Matcha ice cream.

Restaurant Motsuyaki Daitoryo / Motsuyaki

Sporting a name like “Motsuyaki President” seems like big shoes to fill, but this izakaya is famous around Ueno. We recommend trying “motsu nikomi”, a fan-favorite featuring slow-simmered horse parts.  Not a fan of motsu? You can head over to their second store “Motsuyaki Daitoryo Shiten” for yakitori!
