Only about 10 minutes from Osakako station on the Chuo line is Osaka's Aquarium KAIYUKAN, Standing 8 stories high making it one of the largest public aquariums in the world. Through the floors there are 15 large water tanks, each recreating a specific environment, such as the Japan Forest, Pacific Ocean, Antarctica, etc. they house approximately 620 species including, otters, sea lions, penguins, dolphins, whale sharks (largest fish species in the world) and many many more. If you go in the right hour you can even see the staff feed some of them, we recommend checking the feeding times on their home site.

The best place to dine before or after a visit at the aquarium is at Tempozan Market Place located across the aquarium. Here are a few of our favorite places.

Restaurant Tsuruhashi Fugetsu Tempozan Market Place Store

Okonomiyaki is considered to be a symbol of Osaka food culture and   Tsuruhashi Fugetsu is part of that culture with over 60 years of history. Started as a small shop shortly after WW2, today they have shops all across Japan, and all of them are still using the original recipes, preserving the taste of the founder. Their Okonomiyaki set menu starts from 3,400JPY for two people.

Restaurant Jiyuken Tempozan Store

Famous for their original curry, Jiyuken serves curry mixed with rice and a raw egg on top of it, 880JPY. Their special curry rice dish was invented all the way back in 1897 when the founder wanted to make a Western style dish that is also affordable for the general public. That together with the nutrition from the raw egg made this dish extremely popular and still is today.

Restaurant Aizuya Tempozan Store

After okonomiyaki, takoyaki is considered to be a symbol of Osaka food. Aizuya started in 1949 as a small food stand selling takoyaki and has grown to a family business with several stores in Osaka and even one in Tokyo. They take pride in not only protecting the original flavor but also keep to the traditional way of making takoyaki. Prices start from 12 pieces for 600JPY. We recommend the negiyaki flavor made with green onions.
