Osaka Best Okonomiyaki & Takoyaki Editor Picks
2021-04-10
When it comes to Osaka's food, okonomiyaki and takoyaki will always be at the top of the list. Both are considered to have originated in Osaka and are extremely popular there. Okonomiyaki is often called a “Japanese savory pancake”, made from a wheat flour based batter and mixed together with a large variety of ingredients, from vegetables, meat to seafood. One okonomiyaki is usually enough for one person, while takoyaki is much smaller and is considered more of a street food. Takoyaki is also made with a wheat flour based batter traditionally mixed with octopus and vegetables, then cooked in a special frying pan to give it the iconic ball shape.

Editors top 3 Okonomiyaki choices:

Restaurant Onomichi Murakami

Even though okonomiyaki originates in Osaka, this specific store started in Hiroshima and made its way to Osaka with their original Onomichiyaki 1000JPY. This okonomiyaki dish's core ingredients are gizzards and fried flattened dried squid and is made by using Hiroshima style (Hiroshimayaki). The main difference is that instead of mixing all the ingredients together, you cook them in layers and it will always have noodles in them (yakisoba or udon). You can find this shop about 5 minutes from Kita-shinchi station.
